According to the tooltip, having the venerated animals in close proximity to a pawn gives them a mood boost, the more there are the bigger the boost. I haven't tested first hand to confirm, though. Your colonists get mood debuffs if they kill an “innocent” venerated animal, and if they eat it’s meat.
