Phosphoketolase pathway steps
WebDetailed studies carried out on glucose catabolism in adult Ascaris suum have shown that glucose is metabolised using the classical Embden-Meyerhof-Pamas pathway to form phosphoenol pyruvate (PEP) ( Chart 2 ). Further metabolism of PEP is mediated by phosphoenol pyruvate carboxykinase (PEP-CK) and pyruvate kinase (PK). Web[other names include 6-phosphogluconate/pentose phosphoketolase pathway (6-PG/PK) or the hexose monophosphate shunt]. This metabolic pathway is characterized by initial dehydrogenation steps, which leads to formation of 6- phosphogluconate, followed by decarboxylation.
